Beyond Your Skincare Routine

Phthalates in our cosmeticsVOC's in our bedroom paintPFA's in our pillowsBPA's in our sports bras (please don't come for our leggings...or maybe just don't tell us?). We know we're not alone when we say that we pay very close attention to what what goes in, on, and around our precious bodies. We want to take such good care of ourselves and our families all the time that if there's a better and more informed choice to be made, we're going to try and make it.

So. Why do we often ignore what we wear to sleep in?

We've all gotten the "your skin is the largest and most important organ in your body so take good care of it" memo AND the "you spend half of your life in bed, shouldn't you have nice sheets?" message.

From silk pillowcases, to (justifiably?) spendy night creams, organic mattresses and luxe (definitely justifiably) splurgy linen bedding, we make sure that we're doing everything we can to make our nighttime routines as nourishing and bioavailable as possible...everything BUT examine our sleepwear—the thing that spends the most time in the closest proximity to our skin during the precious regenerative hours of slumber.

The majority of pajamas and sleepwear are made of synthetic thermoplastics. Nylon, rayon, polyester, and spandex blends can feel soft to the touch but often contain known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors—and, while they will wick moisture, they won’t absorb it. If you sweat at all (or spill water on yourself trying to desperately hydrate while still lying down—just us?) the wetness will continue to just...sit there on your skin. Combine that with our native skin bacteria microbiome and if you don’t wake up with a sweat, you might wake up with a stink (ever tried to wash a smelly workout shirt to no avail? it's like that, but you woke up with it).

Super soft modals and bamboos are a less synthetic-heavy alternative, but we find—especially in the rare all-natural fiber blends—that their short staple fiber lengths lead to pilling after one or two washes.

Natural fibers like silk, cotton, or linen last a long time, feel good to the touch, and are good for your skin—they definitely breathe and regulate heat pretty well, which is why they've been a traditional go-to for sleepwear and dressing gowns since the earliest days of shift chemises. They also wrinkle easily, often require specific care in washing, and take for.ev.er to dry. Wet cotton, linen, or silk feels awful on the skin, can cause terrible chafing, and also shows its wetness (we have a somewhat embarrassing story involving a very gorgeous and expensive pair of silk pajamas, some incredibly obvious wet pit stains, and a honeymoon room service waiter...we'll tell you over drinks sometime).

You've probably noticed some or all of the above when choosing what to sleep in—we definitely have, which is why we started A DOMANI in the first place.

When we chose the fabric for our collection, the #1 priority was for wet pajamas to NOT be the reason for middle of the night wake-ups. A secondary but equally as important priority was to find fabric that was natural, easy to care for, and where the skin-caring properties never wash out in the laundry. The fact that the fabric *might* be just as powerful a part of our skincare routines as the price-not-to-be-discussed tub of crème de la crème moisturizer? That's the icing on the cake.

With its proprietary yarn construction, our PYRATEX® power 1 fabric is the first of its kind to deliver the incredible functionality and durability of synthetic fabrics with a natural, non-synthetic wood-based fiber harvested from ethically managed eucalyptus, spruce, pine, birch and beech forests.

The exclusive weave was also specifically designed to be compatible with human skin cells (keratinocytes), and is smoothing and anti-irritating on the molecular level. Sensitive or sensitized skin, tender nipples, postpartum skin, irritated or dry skin, healing skin, aging skin—as your skin moves this fabric moves with it.

We like to think of it as a silk pillowcase for your body, but one that's anti-irritating, anti-bacterial, moisture wicking, quick drying, insanely luxurious, with no chemicals, carcinogens, unpronounceable compounds, bummers, or stinks.

Also, if the rest of your skincare routine involves slathering your precious body in lotions and potions before bed, these pajamas won't feel greasy or sticky on the body.

On every level, it's something you can feel great about all day—and all night—long.
